Building a High-End Custom Home on Challenging Coastal Terrain

We built a high-end, bespoke custom home in the rural coastal area of Hamstead.

The Gulliver family

Hamstead, Isle of Wight

01

The Challenge

Building in the area presented unique environmental, rural, and structural logistics that required meticulous coordination and technical problem-solving. This included complex ground conditions, as the site was located on unstable, water-logged coastal soil structures near the Newtown Creek estuary network, offering poor traditional bearing capacity.

To ensure long-term structural integrity against shifting ground, the property demanded specialised deep-foundation work, requiring piling to an intense depth of 18 metres. In addition, the project required precise execution of complex internal joinery and heavy architectural stonework.

Our Solution

Leveraging all our experience, we guided the build safely from ground break to final handover, including the complex piling phase and the engineering of a solid ring beam foundation system to anchor the home permanently.

We seamlessly balanced heavy coastal engineering constraints with premium, highly
tailored interior craftsmanship to create a durable and deeply personal family home.

"Choosing WH Brading for our build in Hamstead was an absolute joy. When we realised the property had to be piled to 18 metres, we needed a builder we could trust to deliver. The team handled the complexities so well, and provided us with a beautiful home for our family to enjoy."

The Outcome

The final result of this project is a beautifully engineered, custom home that perfectly matches the Gulliver family’s vision. From the complex deep foundations to the interior finish, it’s a property our entire team is incredibly proud to have built.

"Everything from the bespoke tri-colour kitchen to the open stone feature in the centre of the house, WH Brading truly built the heart of our family home. We couldn’t be happier.”
